Women in the Driver's Seat: an automotive career forum

More than 125 women gathered at the Center for Automotive Education & Training in November 2007 for the annual Automotive Career Forum for Women, sponsored by GNYADA. The event featured a panel of women who've found success and excitement in dealership careers, including technicians, managers, sales personnel, and senior executives.

Keynote speakers included New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and Jody DeVere, President of AskPatty.com, an automotive website geared toward women.

During the event, women met with dealers from throughout the region-and a number of them received job offers on the spot. The positions are ideal for women who are balancing busy lives. According to panelist Suzanne Cochrane, General Manager for Helms Bros. Mercedes, the industry has great opportunities for women. "Flexibility and earning potential are big draws and an added bonus for mothers," she said.

Automotive Careers for Veterans

Metro New York's new car dealers are always looking for talented, hardworking employees-and GNYADA is working closely with the Department of Labor and the Department of Veterans Affairs to bring them together. In late October, the Association held an Automotive Career Fair for Veterans at the Center to encourage veterans to consider careers in new car dealerships.

Automotive Career Fair

Every October, GNYADA and The Center welcome metro area high school students to Automotive Career Fair, a high-energy day that includes presentations on getting started in the industry, upcoming technologies, and pathways for success. More than 1,000 students attend over two days. The students and their teachers have the opportunity to meet with manufacturer representatives, dealers, and also tour The Center's onsite technician training program at Lincoln Tech.
